Styles seem to change as often as seasons, so it can be a challenge to keep up! Don’t worry, though. We’ve got your back. This week, we’re covering some of our favorite fall rugs as well as a few overall design tips and tricks that will help you get your home feeling cozy in the coming cooler months.
Find Your Favorite Fall Décor First
There’s a good reason interior decorators call fall their favorite season. The cooler weather encourages us to stay inside and really enjoy our spaces. It also opens opportunities for chunky blankets and fuzzy textures that really dial up the cozy factor. Meanwhile, the fresh harvest offers tons of inspiration for accent pieces. Pumpkins, gourds, apples, and other autumn botanicals are a great way to bring a rustic, down-home feeling into your spaces.
Your fall rugs will serve as the backdrop to this décor, so try to make sure they work together! Generally, we like contrast to ensure our spaces aren’t ever overwhelming or too boring. This means that if you’re the kind of maximalist that loves to fill every inch of your home with tchotchkes and sit-arounds, you may want to consider a simpler design for your rugs. On the other hand, if you only intend to put out a few things here or there, you can get away with a bolder design and make your rug the focus of the room.
Embrace Autumnal Colors
One of the best things about decorating in the fall is that nature has already picked a color palette for you! Take your cues from the changing leaves and embrace the beautiful browns, reds, oranges, and yellows you see around you. Mix in warm, neutral grays and tans and you’ll be well on your way toward the cozy cabin feeling we all crave this time of year.
That being said, you shouldn’t be afraid to experiment. Traditional fall colors will always be solid standbys, but they can start to look a little passe. Pantone’s Autumn/Winter 2020/2021 London Color Palette is full of bright, optimistic colors that break away from the usual fall tropes. Brighter colors are a great reminder of warmer days to come—something we all might need as we head into the end of the year.
Fill Your Home with Cozy Textures
The best fall rugs fully embrace cozy textures and materials. The reason is obvious: as the weather cools outside, we want to spend more time in the warm indoors. It’s important that your interior spaces are able to provide that warmth and comfort that you crave.
Wool is the obvious go-to material for warmth and comfort. These rugs are great year-round, but they’re especially welcome in the cooler fall and winter months. Unfortunately, they also have the downside of typically more expensive than other materials.
Other popular choices include synthetic materials such as polypropylene. These days, it’s easy to find synthetic rugs that rival the strength and comfort of wool. Synthetic rugs are also typically available in a wider variety of textures, patterns, and colors than wool rugs. If you go this route, we recommend searching for high-pile and even shag rugs that really promote comfort in cool weather.
You might also opt for a natural rug made of jute or sisal. While these rugs offer less in the way of comfort or cozy feelings, they match extremely well with rustic “harvest” themed décor. Paired with another, “cozier” rug layered on top, you’ll get the best of both worlds!
