Take it from Huey Lewis — it's hip to be square! Since most rugs are rectangular, the boxy shape of a square rug can end up creating a very out-of-the-box look whenever they are used.
A good rule of thumb is to have the shape of your rug follow the shape of the room its displayed in. Because most rooms are rectangular, it follows that most rugs would be rectangular as well. But for rooms with more equal proportions, a square rug might be more appropriate. In a dining room or breakfast nook, a square kitchen rug can provide an interesting contrast to a small round table or perfectly fit the lines of a square one.
