Medallion Rugs
Large central medallions are iconic in traditional rugs. Common in Persian rugs, the intricate shape provides a foundation for the rest of the pattern. Rug medallions come in a wide variety of shapes and designs, though they are typically round with radial symmetry. Some of the most common are floral designs inspired by lotus blossoms. Other common designs include quatrefoils and complex stars. The central medallion will often be flanked by garlands or wreaths that create a sense of great elegance.
