When a 9x12 fits
A 9x12 suits a living room of roughly 12 by 15 feet or larger. Every piece of seating can sit fully on the rug, with a band of bare floor left showing along the walls so the room does not feel carpeted wall to wall.
Going smaller or larger
If your sofa sits against a wall or the room is compact, an 8x10 lets just the front legs rest on the rug. For an open plan room or a large sectional, a 10x13 covers more floor and keeps the furniture from hanging off the edges.
Washable 9x12 rugs
A big rug in a family room sees spills, pets and a lot of guests over the holidays. Washable rugs are made to be cleaned with water at home, so check each rug's care notes for how to wash it.
