Holiday Rug Survival Guide: Essential Care Tips

The holiday season is here! Even though you may not be having as large a celebration as usual this year, you might still expect plenty of wear and tear on your rugs. Last week we brought you a host of holiday rugs that will look great all season long This week, we want to share a few holiday rug care tips on to make sure they will continue to look good even into the new year!

Why do I need rugs for the holidays?

Rugs are an important piece of décor any time of year, but they take on extra importance during the holiday season. With a home full of people coming and going and moving about, you can expect a lot more wear-and-tear on your floors and a lot more noise in general.

Holiday rugs bring all of this to heel by offering a soft, sound-absorbing layer between your feet and your floors. Not only will your floors be spared from all the damage that can be done by all the extra foot traffic, but you’ll also go a long way to reducing the annoying and potentially dangerous loud volume that comes with larger crowds.

Choose a patterned rug

One of the best methods of holiday rug care is prevention. If you’re planning on buying a brand-new holiday rug, consider one with more intricate patterns! Aside from just looking great, patterned rugs go a long way toward hiding dirt that would be plain to see on a solid-colored rug.

By the same logic, dark colored rugs are preferrable to light colored ones when you’re setting up a space for entertaining. Even though those snowy whites are oh so stylish this time of year, it may be better to leave the winter wonderland outside.

Have some rug cleaner on hand

Try as you might, sometimes spills are inevitable. Stay ahead of them and protect your rug by taking precautions ahead of time.

You should always have these three things easily accessible before any entertaining:

  1. Paper towels
  2. Sponge
  3. Uni-Clean Rug Cleaner

If an unfortunate spill does happen, act quickly and follow these steps:

  1. After removing loose or dry soil and blotting up wet stains with a clean cloth or sponge, apply Uni-Clean to the soiled area.
  2. Wait 1 to 5 minutes for the product to penetrate the fibers and loosen the soil.
  3. Blot excess product from the surface using a clean cloth or sponge.
  4. Allow the area to dry for 15 to 30 minutes.
  5. For stubborn stains, it may be necessary to repeat the cleaning process, and/or softly brush the area during application.

While Uni-Clean is safe for all materials, it’s always a good idea to do a spot test in an inconspicuous part of your rug to make sure. Then, remember to always blot the spill from the outside-in. Don’t rub, as that could damage the fibers of your rug or even drive the spill further in!
