Rust Red Washable Timeless Rug
Moroccan Rugs
Morocco is a land of great diversity and endless beauty. The north African country's storied history has led to a rich culture influenced as much by ancient Roman and Islamic empires as by modern France, Spain, and its own indigenous Berber people. Today, Morocco is known for its beautiful beaches and historic sites as well as its cultural exports like food and, of course, rugs.
The Moroccan rugs available online at Rugs.com cover a range of traditional styles mostly woven by the Berber people of the High Atlas Mountains. Meant to keep homes warm in the chilly mountain climate, these tribal rugs tend to be made of soft, heavy wool with a high pile that never looks too shaggy. Because they are typically made by untrained weavers, the designs tend to be more uneven and abstract than those found in other Oriental rugs. The asymmetry adds to the charm of these truly unique pieces.
One of the most well-known styles is the Beni Ourain rug, made of 100% undyed sheepskin wool. The resulting ivories and dark browns make them a perfect neutral backdrop to any color or décor. Meanwhile, Azilal rugs are like Beni Ourains, though Azilal rugs typically include more intricate geometric designs and bright colors made with natural dyes. Finally, the growing popularity of Boucherouite rugs have made these rugs a common purchase among shoppers. Like Chindi rugs, Boucherouite rugs are typically made from recycled materials and scrap textiles. This creates a brightly colored, highly textured, and one-of-a-kind rug.
